Evocative and sensual, this sublime Tony Scherman work on paper is an excellent example of his command of encaustic and his unique aesthetic.
Throughout his illustrious and dynamic career Tony Scherman (b. 1950) has created striking bodies of work that depict the female form; characters from history, literature or contemporaries that delight or intrigue him. He frequently references the canonized artists who propelled the history of painting ranging from Goya to Manet.
Scherman's recent works, notably the series "Difficult Women" have depicted controversial, inspirational female figures. This work, which predates the series, is a paradigm of his practice in both form and content.
Tony Scherman’s work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
